New beginning
Feb 2nd this year (2011) some people at work decided to start a weight loss contest . I entered the contest mostly to represent the graveyard shift but when i saw my numbers at the weight-in I almost shat myself 270lbs!!! man I was embarrassed but still decided to sign up knowing it was no longer about the money or the bragging rights but my capacity to stay alive. I went on to change my eating habits (but no exercise) and by the 25th i had lost 18lbs it feelt great loosing almost a pound a day and I went out on my first "run" around my neighborhood.
The First few blocks felt good , even several blocks later but then i realized that it was only the half way and if I didn't want to call the wife to come get me then I should head back while there was still some pep on my increasingly tired step.
On the way back on the last block, MY block the only thought that helped me thru was
"DO NOT LET YOUR NEIGHBORS SEE YOU CRY"
I could hear my heart pounding on my eye balls, my lungs were all itchy like they were allergic to fresh cold air , and oddly enough I felt the need to take a shit on the corner but I made it all the way home with clean underpants and on a little over 24.min. not bad for a first try.
That afternoon I cleared the trip counter on the odometer after filling up the gas, after all, I was on my way to measure that immense distance from my first run .
¡¡¡1 mile !!!
That was all? how in the fuck? no-no-no fuck this!!
I went around again maybe i had gone thru some kind of black hole making my driving trip less than that of my running trip, something Einstein surely had studied , a fat person on driver's shoes goes farther than a driver on a fat car or something like that , but nope, 1 lousy mile at 24 minutes .
The very next morning after work i went out again and again the day after that and so on for 5 days straight then i read somewhere that you have to take some rest in between so I took a day off but visited a bunch of sites on running , found out about barefoot running, I been running on driver's shoes which are thin and with a very low heel, so barefoot running or minimalist shoes were kinda attractive to me , that weekend i got me a pair of Fivefinger shoes, weird looking things , like toe socks but they felt great and I ran a mile on them right out of the box without any pain and in 3 minutes less than my best time
For the past 3 weeks I been doing 1mile to 1.5 miles 4 times a week
last weekend I ran 5k (3.2 miles) on 42 minutes, my first mile was slowest at 15 min , last mile i did in 12min
I have lost a solid of 25lbs so far, and I am going to loose more in the next few months, I want to do a 10k in the summer
yesterday i ran one mile in a little less than 9 minutes!!
